More than half of all HVAC contractor work for HVAC Companies. A contractor is a business person who does building work for clients. Some jobs involve putting together big systems on construction sites. Some jobs involve making repair calls to local homes and businesses. Some HVAC technicians make many calls in one day. Other services may work on one big job for a long time.

Utility companies hire heating and cooling technicians to call on their customers. These technicians check on customers' heating and air conditioning equipment and is working properly.

Sales:
Some HVAC contractors sell systems and service as well. A contractor who does sales work must also keep up with industry changes. They write reports about their work, call on current and new prospective clients, order parts and communicate with technicians.

Some contractors work for manufacturers of heating and cooling equipment. These people help plan, build and text new products. They work with engineers who plan and build new machines or structures.

Many HVAC contractors go into business for themselves. They become contractors or consultants. They may become equipment dealers, sales workers or installers themselves.
